LX5 5 Lever Mortice Lock

Whether you’re a locksmith, a homeowner, or an architectural ironmonger – you want to fit the best quality lock for the door. In this article, we’re going to be taking a look at 5 lever mortice deadlocks and more specifically, the APECS LX5.

5 lever mortice locks are most commonly used on wooden doors and as you may have guessed from the name, have 5 levers inside them! The lock works when the key is inserted and moves these 5 levers into different positions, depending on the shape of the key. This then allows the lever to be thrown – locking or unlocking the door.

When it comes to choosing a 5 lever mortice lock, one of the most important things to look out for is the BS3621 certification. The BS3621 certification is controlled by the British Standards Institution (BSI) who were founded in 1901 as the Engineering Standards Committee. BSI set out to ensure that services and products meet the expectations of quality, safety and reliability.

When it comes to the certification relating to mortice locks, there are a number of things which locks must have, to pass the BS3621 certification and for mortice locks, these are;

  • The lock must have at least 5 levers

  • The screws which fix the lock to the door must not be accessible when the door is shut

  • The lock must be covered by a hardened metal plate in order to protect from drilling

  • When the door is locked, the bolt must protrude by at least 20mm

  • When activating the lock, the bolt must be completely activated before the key can be removed

Many insurance companies will require a BS3621 certified lock on the external downstairs doors as a minimum to offer home insurance and although having a certified lock may not bring your premiums down, not having a certified lock could prevent you from getting home insurance.

Here at APECS, we have our LX5 lock which is a BS3621 certified, 5 lever mortice dead lock. We have modified the traditional 5 lever deadlock by developing our own springless mechanism which delivers lost motion action and helps to secure the lock from picking, as well as providing long lasting durability.

The LX5 lock features a solid brass 20mm deadbolt which is reinforced with hardened steel pins. In addition to this, the LX5 comes with hardened steel plates on either side of the body to withstand severe drill attacks, making the LX5 one of the most secure 5 lever dead locks available on the UK market.
